The key to the intelligent building: the future of smart access – a dialogue of the future at the Intersec Forum

Secure and convenient access solutions, linking the internet of things (IoT) with the well-tried world of mechatronics: this is what experts from applied research and forgers of technology will be discussing at the Smart Access Dialogue on the fifth conference day of the Intersec Forum – chaired by Professor Kai-Dietrich Wolf, head of the Institute for Security Systems at the University of Wuppertal. The focus will be on the innovations of digital and IoT applications for electronic access control and modern locking systems, under the general remit of data security (cyber security) and data protection (privacy). Around 180 speakers from Germany, France, Great Britain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel and the USA will be taking part in the conference for networked security technology from 19 to 23 March in Frankfurt am Main, to be held at the same time as Light + Building, the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building services technology.

Access tomorrow means smart-access management

The merger of electronic components with mechatronic locking systems is opening quite new horizons for modern access systems. Thus, building users with a smartphone as an “identity card” no longer need separate chipcards or key tags, even for different buildings, but use an app designed for opening doors. This has been made possible by new transmission technologies, such as near-field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth low energy (BLE).

Dr Christian Zenger, CEO of Physec GmbH, which specialises in cryptography-based security, says: “The future of access control is smart access management. It will take its orientation from the achievements of the IoT (simple, secure, wireless) and embed encryption, authentication and key management as aspects in a joint process. Let us think now about efficient and user-friendly key-management and its integration into the constitution of a building and of its IT structures, for the future will arrive.”

Uniform operation via a smartphone gives its users a significant gain in convenience and lowers the administrative costs for the operators. This applies particularly to services which can be provided only with difficulty, or at great expense, with conventional keys or smart cards. In this way the short-term issue of entitlements, including those valid for a restricted time in hotels or for servicing industrial plant, will be made considerably simpler, and the same for temporary access by delivery, cleaning and maintenance staff on the domestic scene as part of assisted living. New possibilities will also arise in access to jointly used resources, such as car sharing.*

Authentication is “key”

Use of a trustworthy identity and uniform operation for different services will also only raise user acceptance of networked buildings. According to a study by a British market-research company in more than 50 countries, 85% of those surveyed want to use one identity for several systems and services.* 60% of participants say that the use of a mobile device considerably increases operating efficiency.

If networked smart access technologies are to be introduced, it will be absolutely necessary to provide optimum protection against misuse of user data and cyber-attacks with regard to data security and data protection. Intensive research is underway for this purpose into secure encryption technologies and “secure end-to-end solutions”, but also into the evaluation of biometric data, without inferring the identity of the individual. An essential aspect is likewise the storage of sensitive data in a particularly protected area. A particular challenge in the case of door-locking systems consists of secure identification with as little energy consumption as possible. “Energy harvesting” is already in use whereby, when moving the door handle, energy is converted through shape-memory materials into electric current and used to drive the locking system.     

Intersec Forum: Digital locking and access control systems

The fifth day of the Intersec Forum (23 March) revolves around the subject of smart access. Under the chairmanship of Professor Kai-Dietrich Wolf, head of the Institute for Security Systems of the University of Wuppertal, experts will discuss innovations for digital and IoT applications for electronic access control and modern locking systems with respect to cybersecurity and privacy. The speakers include Ho Chang, CEO of Nuremburg-based software specialists for biometric face recognition, BioID, Antoine Huber, Director IoT for Building – Mobile Services & IoT with international digital security supplier Gemalto France, Karsten Nölling, Chairman of the Board of Management of digital locking system developer KIWI.KI GmbH, and Dr Christian Zenger, CEO of the Physec start-up company. In the final panel discussion Ann-Kathrin Schmitt for BiolD, Dr Thomas Angelke from the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (Verbraucherzentrale-Bundesverband), Thomas Kahl, special counsel at Taylor Wessing, and Karsten Nölling from KIWI.KI will consider the current question: smart services and data protection – will the new General Data Protection Regulation change the rules of the game?

At the Messe Frankfurt Intersec Forum from 19 to 23 March 2018 some 80 experts from industry, academic research and government will be discussing the development and application of networked security technology in the intelligent building of tomorrow. The speakers will come from Germany, France, Great Britain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel and the USA. The talks will be available to conference participants in German and English (simultaneous translation). On the evening of the third day of the conference, Wednesday, 21 March, the organisers, Messe Frankfurt and Cooperation Partner ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association), invite all participants for a get-together in the conference area, (Hall 9.1, Stand E90).

Intersec Forum is held annually under the motto ‘Security meets Smart Building: digitalisation and security in tomorrow’s buildings’ and concurrently with the leading international trade fairs, Light + Building and ISH. In March 2018, Intersec Forum is being held in Hall 9.1 of Light + Building, the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building services technology.
